I’m increasingly convinced that the inmates are running this asylum that I find myself in. Politicians (well, one, take a bow Sir Kier Starmer) couldn’t explain until recently what a ‘woman’ is. It took the UK Supreme Court to rule that a man is a man and a woman is a woman and that the difference is defined by sex. Didn’t 99.9% of us already know that?

And then there’s that beacon of everything honest and reasonable, Donald Trump, declaring that the Ukraine started the war with Russia, despite the overwhelming evidence and international consensus that Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, escalating a conflict that began in 2014. Why does nobody challenge him on this outrageous lie? Except of course for President Volodymyr Zelensky who stands head and shoulders above Trump and his minions.

If that’s not enough to convince me that we’re now in a Kafkaesque world, we have Ed Miliband determined to bankrupt us in his evangelical drive to reach net zero. His decision to close the last coal power station, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, in 2024, symbolised the end of coal power generation in the UK. But wait, didn’t we need coking coal to keep the blast furnaces in Scunthorpe operational? Doh!  This resulted in the fiasco of having to import coking coal from Australia and N. America to prevent the furnaces from seizing up, which would have ended the last vestige of steel production in the UK. And how did these global shipments contribute to achieving net zero? Are these ships wind or water powered? No, it will be that apocalyptic substance called “oil”!

This world has changed, and not for the better. I can’t even get out of it by casting my democratic vote, because whoever I vote for does the opposite of what they say in their manifesto. The current Labour government has delivered the following:

  • Higher energy prices
  • Increased National Insurance for businesses.
  • Increased immigration
  • Inheritance tax that penalises family businesses and farmers
  • Higher inflation (and IMF forecasts to go even higher)
  • Increase in crime
  • Increased power to Unions (planned).

I didn’t vote for any of this, and I doubt that most people did. Maybe Musk is not the idiot he seems; perhaps our escape route is Mars. But I’m betting that will get screwed up as well!

I’m a life-long learner with an insatiable curiosity about life. I love travel, good food, and good company. I’m happy to share what I know with others….even the interesting stuff! My outlook on life is pretty well captured in this quote from a book about the legend of King Arthur: “The best thing for being sad,” replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, “is to learn something. That’s the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.” ― T.H. White, The Once and Future King So much to learn, so little time!
