Google Notebook
I used Google’s NotebookLM application to help me plan this holiday. This is an incredible (and free) application that enables you to create you’re own curated sources for subsequent AI queries and analysis. It also created the Infographic at the head of this page.
Google NotebookLM is an AI-powered research and note-taking assistant that “grounds” its intelligence in your specific documents. Unlike standard AI chatbots that rely on general internet knowledge, NotebookLM answers questions and performs tasks using only the sources you upload, effectively becoming an instant expert on your materials.
What NotebookLM Can Do
NotebookLM allows you to curate a specific “Notebook” for a project by uploading up to 50 sources (such as PDFs, Google Docs, Slides, website URLs, copied text, or YouTube videos). Once your sources are added, it can:
- Generate “Audio Overviews”: Turn your dense documents into an engaging, lively “podcast” conversation between two AI hosts who discuss the key themes and connections in your material.
- Chat with Your Documents: Answer specific questions about your files (e.g., “What does this report say about Q3 marketing spend?”).
- Create Instant Study Aids: Automatically generate FAQs, study guides, timelines, and briefing documents based on your sources.
- Verify Facts with Citations: Every answer it provides includes inline citations (little numbers) that, when clicked, scroll you directly to the exact paragraph in your original document where the information was found.
- Summarize & Compare: Synthesize information across multiple documents to find common themes or contradictions.
Key Benefits
- Trust & Accuracy (Reduced Hallucinations): Because the AI is restricted to the information you provide, it is far less likely to “make things up” compared to general AI models like ChatGPT.
- Instant Fact-Checking: The inline citations allow you to immediately verify the AI’s claims against your own source text, making it safe for professional or academic work.
- Time Efficiency: It can analyze massive amounts of information (up to 500,000 words per source) in seconds, saving you hours of reading time.
- Multimodal Learning: The “Audio Overview” feature is a major benefit for auditory learners or busy professionals, allowing them to “listen” to a report or textbook while commuting or working out.
- Data Privacy: Your data is not used to train Googleโs base AI models, and your sources remain private to you unless you explicitly share the notebook.

17th February – Sentosa
Sentosa is Singapore’s most advertised island and is characterised primarily as an artificial island that functions as a massive, touristy resort and theme park hub. It is home to Universal Studios Singapore and Resorts World, and the entire island is structured such that visitors must navigate through various commercial attractions even if their primary goal is just to reach the beach.
Though we visited one of the beaches, the main attraction for us was the Aquarium, probably the biggest we have seen anywhere (bigger than the one in Atlanta?).

19th February – Singapore
MTR Tourist ticket for all day travel, S$17 (about ยฃ10). China Town. MTR to Marina Bay Walked to Garden by the Bay. Visited the Flower Garden, Cloud forest and the Jurassic Park exhibition. Couldn’t do the walk through the Supertree Grove due to heavy rain. Shuttle Bus to Harbour Front Back and forth on the MTR looking for Raffles Hotel. Next time, remember that the closest MTR is Esplanade. Found Raffles, had the obligatory Singapore Sling and peanuts. S$44 (up from S$38 the last time we visited). NB look up history of the founder of the Singapore Sling. Made our way to Boat Quay for Chilli Crab. Had to wait until 9pm to book at Palm Sands – the best place in Singapore for Chilli Crab. Got lost looking for an MTR to take us back to Sentosa, Still bloody raining! Found a taxi to take us back to Harbour front where we picked up the MTR Express back to Sentosa.

20th February – Sea Day
21st February – Sea Day
22nd February – Sea Day
Omakase dining experience, 10-course, chef-curated Japanese meal. It was excellent!
23rd February – Benoa Bali
Raining on arrival. Day trip to Kuta Town, famed for its white beaches.

24th February – Celukan Bawang.
Tender operation. Went for a walk, but not much to see. Many hawkers and taxi drivers offering tours. Bought a t-shirt and a dress for Lynda.
25th February – Sea Day
Dinner at Le Petit Chef
26th Februray – Sea Day
Medical emergency yesterday. Itinerary changed, not visiting Kuala Lumpur. Extra sea day.
Crossing the line ceremony, midway across the Java Sea. The Equator Crossing Ceremony (or “Crossing the Line”) is a maritime rite of passage initiating sailors and passengers from “pollywogs” (novices) to “Trusty Shellbacks” (veterans). The ceremony is completed by ‘kissing the fish’.

27th February – Sea Day
28th February – Penang, Malaysia
George Town, the capital of Penang, is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its exceptional blend of colonial history, diverse cultural heritage, and world-class street food. The city is a living gallery, famous for vibrant murals by Ernest Zacharevic, such as the “Boy on Motorbike” and “Children on a Bicycle. All of this can be seen on the the George Town walking tour. 1st March – Phuket, Thailand
Malaysian Greeting: Sawadikar. Disembarked at Patong Beach, then bus trip to Phang NGA Bay. Boarded a long boat, powered by a V8 car engine, to take us across the bay, taking in James Bond island, where they filmed ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’, and then on to the floating Panyi Village. The village is a series of boardwalks with wooden buildings serving as both homes and tourist shops. Bought a carved elephant and some other presents.

2nd March – Sea Day
3rd March – Singapore
Visited Bugis Junction and Bugis Street market. Bugis Street has changed a lot since my Royal Navy days (70’s). Cleaned up and a bit antiseptic, but the market sells just about everything and there are plenty of hawker food stalls. It is a colourful and vibrant place to visit. We also saw a troop celebrating Chinese New Year, a traditional dragon (very long tail) with much noise of drums banging and symbols crashing.
Finally, a trip to the airport for our flight home to London. It has been a great holiday, but it all ended too soon!
